Emergency Contraception

If you have had unprotected sex, for example if you didn’t use a condom, or the condom broke, or you forgot to take your other birth control, or other similar scenario, there are emergency birth control options available which may help to prevent a pregnancy.

For an appointment for an EMERGENCY IUD call us at 604-709-5611. Please clearly tell us the reason for your call so that we can prioritize your care.

There are three options for emergency birth control:

  1. Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) can prevent over 99% of pregnancies after unprotected intercourse. Copper IUDs are effective when inserted within 7 days after unprotected sex, and the Mirena IUD is effective if inserted within 5 days after unprotected sex.
  2. Plan B is available over the counter at your local pharmacy. It is 2 pills and prevents about 60% of pregnancies if taken within 72 hours (3 days) or unprotected sex.
  3. Ella requires a prescription, which you can get at Willow, prescribing pharmacies or walk-in clinics. It is a single pill and prevents about 70% of pregnancies if taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex. It can still work up to 120 hours (5 days) from unprotected sex, but is less effective.

If you are 12-16 days or more from after the first day of your last period, you may have already ovulated (produced an egg) and Ella and Plan B may not work. If you are past this point, an emergency IUD may be a better choice for you.

If you have been a victim of sexual assault or rape, emergency birth control can be an important part of your care. Please also seek medical attention to make sure the rest of your health needs are taken care of. Information on how to get care can be found on the BC Women’s Hospital website.

Cost:

Plan B is covered for anyone with a valid BC Services Card and Ella cost between $30-50, depending on the pharmacy. If you have private health insurance the cost may be covered.

The cost of a copper or Mirena IUD is covered for anyone with a valid BC Services Card. Without this, the cost is between $90 (copper) and $500 (Mirena).

There is no charge for IUD insertion if you have a BC Services Card or health coverage from another Canadian province or territory (except Quebec). If you do not have coverage the cost of insertion is $325.
